What is your position at Piper Communications and describe your role?
I’m the Director of Media and Stakeholder Relations. In this role, I hold primary responsibility for clients’ public relations and earned media results. I also develop and maintain relationships with firm and client stakeholders, including public officials, governmental entities and staff, associations, and community and business leaders. I’m the project lead for several clients and serve as the media lead for several other clients, developing public relations and communications strategies and campaigns while leading client teams alongside my talented and driven coworkers. Though my primary focus is media and strategic communications, I like to dabble in all things public and government relations – including content creation, digital media, writing & messaging, coalition building, public policy, and advocacy work.
What’s your favorite part about working at Piper Communications?
I can’t choose just one! Here are a few:
- My amazing, talented, and genuine coworkers – I love learning from them, collaborating with them, and working together to solve complex problems that add real, tangible value to our clients’ bottom lines.
- We’re a FULL service firm, meaning, we say yes to a lot of different, interesting work. From digital and media campaigns, to graphic and website design, to technical writing and event planning–we do it all, and we customize each project to our clients’ unique interests and needs.
- I enjoy working for such a diverse set of clients. We’re always bringing in new clients and new work for existing, long-term clients, keeping us on our toes. Yet we maintain consistency and expertise in energy and technology – two globally important and prolific industries.
- We’re incredibly nimble – not just in adapting to clients’ needs, but also in our ways of working. We all place an enormous amount of trust in each other to get things done, and we all have each other’s genuine best interests in mind – both personally and professionally. Our trust and relationships allow us a flexible, collaborative, and supportive work environment.
Who or what inspires you in your work and why?
Our clients and their successes–big or small–inspire me every day. Whether they’re inventing a cleaner chemical, building a better software platform, or manufacturing more efficient power plants, the companies and organizations we work with represent the best of human ingenuity. Our goal is to showcase their great work in the most effective way possible, and oftentimes, they make it easy!
What unique skills or perspectives do you bring to your role?
My background in public policy and political communications, and my experience serving as an energy and tech legislative advisor in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate has been a huge benefit to my work at Piper. Having an in-depth understanding of government processes has allowed me to provide valuable insight and connections, ultimately enabling me to communicate and advocate for clients more effectively. My knowledge and personal interest in energy and technology serve to provide credibility among media outlets, business leaders and government officials to give clients the connections they need to succeed.
In your opinion, what makes the culture at Piper Communications stand out?
As one of our long-term clients said, “I’ve kept engaging Piper because of their responsiveness, attention to detail, and ability to juggle complicated projects. Piper has the horsepower to handle messaging campaigns yet is nimble enough to manage rapid responses to breaking news.”
Piper stands out from other PR firms because of our nimbleness. We maintain the best qualities of a bespoke, community-oriented team, yet we also possess the strength and depth to develop and manage successful national and international communications campaigns. We know that one size does not fit all, and we tailor each project with the utmost intentionality, maintaining proven best practices while also adapting to changing circumstances, and always getting results. In other words, we can walk and chew gum at the same time.
